Ok SPACE(r)s, truth be told, I wasn’t the strongest fundraiser when we launched EqualSpace. In fact, I probably made more mistakes than I can count. I invested my own money first, pitched to every company, funder, and foundation out there, often wildly and without focus. And the biggest mistake? I never came right out and asked for what I needed as a founder—whether it was investment, sponsorship, support, or even just for them to advocate for me!

As much as we stress the reality of the funding gap, I’ve realized that EqualSpace and my journey are also answering to the knowledge gap. In short, y’all, I was a B.A.D fundraiser! So here’s how you can increase your chances of gaining funding by defining B.A.D. in my own approach.

B.A.D. Fundraising

Bold:

• It’s about making daring asks that align with the magnitude of your vision. Approach potential donors with unwavering confidence. Believe in the impact of your mission and communicate it with such conviction that others are compelled to join your cause. Boldness also involves creativity—designing unique pitches that capture attention and leave a lasting impression.

Audacious:

• Audacity in fundraising means setting your sights on transformational gifts and partnerships. Don’t be afraid to aim high and seek support that can truly change the trajectory of your organization. Take calculated risks that challenge conventional methods it is about breaking the mold and introducing new, sometimes unconventional, approaches to inspire giving. Use your audacious vision to inspire others.

Direct:

• Be straightforward in your communication. Everyone in every industry is busy, many like for you to clearly articulate what you need, why you need it, and how it will make a difference. Directness builds trust and credibility with donors. Focus on the right prospects—those whose values align with your mission. Make clear, specific asks and provide immediate opportunities for donors to take action. Whether it’s a donation, a pledge, or a partnership, be clear about what you want and how they can contribute!
